This may sound silly, but I have doubts about the amount of hay that I am feeding to our two horses. We have a 700 lb, 14 hands Appy and a 750 to 800 lb almost 14 hands Paint. They look good for their size/ not too skinny, not too fat. The Paint is a little fleshy but she has a stout frame. They were getting 3 sections in the morning and 3 sections in the evening of a 70 lb bale of hay. They also grazed most of the day. We live in Michigan and with the cooler weather and decreased grazing they are now getting 4 sections in the morning and evening. The clean up their hay in about 3 to 4 hours. Are they being overfed or do they need more because it is getting colder?
When the vet came out initially, he said feed them whatever you want to. That is a recipe for disaster! They were getting a half a bale twice a day but I have cut them back because they were wasting so much.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Dena
