Personally, I love a gaited horse. There is nothing better. Doesn't look like JC will be gaited, but my filly Raquel seems like her mom and may be. I can only hope :)
Generally, you don't try to start gaiting them until they are comfortable under saddle around 2.5 years. You can usually tell by the way they move their backends and use their hocks as to whether or not they will be able to rack.
I've been lucky enough to show in any number of divisions with saddlebreds. Pleasure, park, performace classes for 3 and 5 gaited horses, pleasure driving, western and, the most recent addition, hunt seat. Each of them have been fun and they have come with their own set of challenges. I always love when a horse finally finds his own division and has an opportunity to excel in his own style of competition. Gaited horses are always a blast because I love the speed and power. 3 gaited classes have been wonderful because of their precision and elegance. I don't know if I could really pick a favorite type. The neatest part of this discussion is to see how truly versitile the breed is. Saddlebreds are so intelligent and beautiful and it's exciting to see all of the opportunities they have as a result.
Don't forget there is also country pleasure. I am pleased to announce that All Things Horsey is now a stable under the name of ATH Stables. This will promote Buck Almighty and Raquel (The Lady Rocks) and her eventual off spring. It is pretty exciting :)
It will be interesting to see how it works. I was smart and said I wanted Tia as I don't have to post lol I didn't realize how much swelling there would be.
