Witnessing a Different Drummer

Back about two decades ago, my late husband and I packed up our big city LA Lifestyle into a U-Haul truck and the back of the Corvair, headed a hundred miles up the highway and a few decades back in time, and bought a beer bar that teetered between the highway and the northern edge of nowhere.

We met the local horsemen a month or so after we took over the bar, when one slipped in the back door and poked his head around the corner, asking permission to tie up 'a couple of' horses out back while… Continue

The Barn Cat's View of the Horse in the Third Stall from the Rafters Looking Down

If I'm balanced on the rafters looking down a nice wide tan place to land slightly sloped on either side but if I jump just right maybe I can land on that neck place with the long hair a bit steeper but it looks soft snuggly furry hmm I wonder if I can nap there it looks so soft snuggly furry let's see the trajectory is going to have to be out 12 degrees down 5 degrees no wind so no adjustments needed let's just see how accurate this is without having to go into more scientific approaches must r… Continue

He said "Hey, Bob, how are we going to tell them apart next spring?" Bob said, "Well, I'll shave the mane off mine and you shav… Continue

A Trip Back in Time to 1908

Thanks to my mom for sending along this little gem. It puts so much into perspective...

In 1908:
The average life expectancy was 47 years. Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!

The average wage in 1908 was 22 cents per hour. The average worker made between $200 and $400 per… Continue

Jodhpurs, Tack, Dungarees - Learning Something New Every Day

As I (the unhorsed) have gotten involved with All Things Horsey, I'm also gaining an incredible education into the complexities of -- well -- all things horsey.

In some ways, I am the least likely and least optimal person to be involved in developing a community of horse lovers and equine experts. But in other ways, I'm an ideal candidate for the job. I bring a natural curiosity to the plate, as well as a need to have almost everything explained (sometimes twice!).

Since I know so little about… Continue
