As I (the unhorsed) have gotten involved with All Things Horsey, I'm also gaining an incredible education into the complexities of -- well -- all things horsey.
In some ways, I am the least likely and least optimal person to be involved in developing a community of horse lovers and equine experts. But in other ways, I'm an ideal candidate for the job. I bring a natural curiosity to the plate, as well as a need to have almost everything explained (sometimes twice!).
Since I know so little about horses, riding, training, gear, events, supplies, apparel
(what the heck are those pants!?) (jodhpurs), equipment (
'tack' is not just something you press into the wall with your thumb), bringing me up to speed is akin to bringing a city-born and -bred pre-teen into the world of equine elements.
I'm not saying 'dummy it down for me,' not by a long shot - more like 'if I can understand it, ANYONE can.' So I'm going to write a bit about what I learn each day about this fascinating new world I'm discovering as I help Nina Kraus get All Things Horsey underway.
We'll just skip over the part that I'm not a pre-teen. I'm afraid my AARP card proves otherwise. But at this stage, it's all just as fascinating as if I were eight instead of fifty-six.
Something New Every Day:
Did you know that JODHPURS are named for the traditional men's trouser worn in the ancient city of Jodhpur in the state of Rajasthan, North India? The word
dungarees has an Indian heritage as well, as
dungri, which means coarse or hard. Who knew - maybe this explains why new jeans are so hellish to wear for a day or so, unless they're pre-washed.
What confused you when you first started? What tickled your curiosity? Let the lessons begin!
